Slaidburn and the Forest of BowlandMany have described Slaidburn as the most picturesque village in Lancashire. From the village green on the bank of the river at the eastern entrance to the village, the main street with its ancient cobbled pavements climbs gently into the heart of the village. By the post office is what looks like a sentry box but is in fact a first aid box that once contained a stretcher for injured fell walkers. A roadside well in the village commemorates the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria and there is a fine war memorial. There are few modern buildings and the village feels frozen in time. A short walk from the centre of the village takes you past the 18th century school to the Medieval Church of St Andrew’s. Local Bird Watching. The Forest of Bowland is an excellent place for the bird watcher. With a huge variety from Hen Harriers to wading birds such as redshank and snipe. Close by Gisburn Forest has may walks and features two bird hides looking out over Stocks Reservoir. John Brennand died in 1717 and left money so the school could be built and endowed. The school was built soon after his death but little is known of John Brennand himself except that he was a bachelor who has been described as a “gentleman” and a “collector of excise”.
Dating from about 1450, the Church stands proud at the Southerly entrance to the village and holds services at 11.00am every Sunday morning. It is an architecturally interesting, listed building with fine interior woodwork including some separately listed pews and one of the few triple deck pulpits in the country. Some places to stay:- |
